Future Leaders Program

2 - 4 February 2009

The Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC) is planning a multifaith leadership training program to take place from Monday, 2 February until Wednesday, 4 February 2009. The program's aim is to bring together young members of the Jewish, Christian and Muslim faiths who are identified as future community leaders, to take part in a three-day residential workshop focusing on leadership training.

The group will consist of thirty individuals aged approximately 18-26, ten from each community. The ADC is liaising both with university student bodies and with heads of major organisations in the Jewish, Christian and Muslim communities in order to attract suitable candidates. The participants we seek to identify are the up-and-coming 'rising stars' in their respective communities.

What is unique about this program?

Whilst there are currently numerous multifaith projects targeting school aged students and adults, there seems to be little if any multifaith programing catering specifically for young people in their late teens or early twenties. This program will provide a variety of opportunities for participants who are already developing into the future leaders of their respective communities. The knowledge that participants will gain from this program will be able to be used within their own communities to ensure that the messages of respect and tolerance are spread throughout our multicultural society. The program will also help to resolve suspicions and prejudices many of us hold toward the other.

What will the program achieve?

Participants of the program, which is partially funded by a grant from the Victorian Multicultural Commission, will benefit from the course in a number of ways:

  • The program will equip participants with the skills required to be an effective leader, whether as a member of a community organisation or in other spheres.
  • Participants will have the opportunity to engage with young leaders of other communities and to gain insight into alternative viewpoints and beliefs.
  • Informative and inspiring speakers will run sessions on mediation, conflict resolution, psychology, the media and public speaking.
  • The course will help to develop the skills needed to effectively and confidently work with members of government, the media and community leaders.
  • Through connecting with young leaders of other communities, participants will have the opportunity to learn in a practical framework about team building, communications and community networking.
