The Jew in the text - Antisemitism above and below the surface

On Sunday evening, 18 October, a large and appreciative audience participated in this program, presented as part of the ADC Basia Leinkram Lecture Series.

The program was presented in three parts, each followed by a discussion between the panellists, Carmela Levy-Stokes and Michelle Prawer and facilitator, Deborah Stone. The first part examined two scenes from Shakespeare's "The Merchant of Venice", and one from Arnold Wesker's modern re-working of the play as "Shylock"; the second part examined film clips from George Eliot's Daniel Deronda and "Chariots of Fire", and the final part a reading of excerpts from David Hare's controversial play "Via Dolorosa" with responses read from Arnold Wesker's "An Open Letter to David Hare".  The parts were read by actors Felix Carrady, Rena Lopata, Misha Nathani, Jeremy Samuel, Adrienne Sloan & George Werther, who also directed.

The evening finished with lively comments and questions from the members of the audience.

Our thanks to the Lecture Series Committee and especially to Lesley Gaspar and Rena Lopata, for their work in organizing this stimulating evening.
